Learning outside the classroom – our partnership with the Outward Bound Trust
At the Hemraj Goyal Foundation, we recognise that learning happens outside of the classroom as well as within it, understanding the need for schools across the nation to develop opportunities for students to develop vital life skills and enhance socio-emotional learning.
The Outward Bound Trust is one such organisation which seeks to plug the widening gap in the learning opportunities of disadvantaged young people in the UK.
The Outward Bound Trust works with schools to send students on week-long outdoor courses that not only encourage them to push themselves beyond their comfort zone, but embrace personal development opportunities in building resilience and compassion. There are 6 residential centres all located in areas of natural outstanding beauty. Through the building of life skills, strong friendships and confidence, the Outward Bound Trust makes a difference in the lives of thousands of young people, by equipping them with the tools they will need to face various challenges throughout their life.
The Outward Bound Trust and HGF have worked together to change over 600 young lives through these powerful courses in the great outdoors over the last few years, and in 2019 HGF were delighted to link the Trust with Bower Park Academy in Romford – the school where HGF’S CEO Anita Goyal taught Science for a number of years .
Bower Park Academy in Romford sent 87 students to Aberdovey in Snowdonia, Wales, in November 2019, as part of an Outward-Bound Trust course to build their confidence, develop their character values, and unlock their potential. Taking part in a variety of team-building activities from conquering the hills, spending a night under the stars and jetty jump into the sea , the week was concluded with a special presentation attended by HGF Trustees Avnish and Anita Goyal, where the students created and performed their own presentations on what they had learnt to acknowledge their hard work during the week.
HGF was proud to support Bower Park’s partnership with the Outward Bound Trust, particularly focussing on developing the students’ LORIC skills:
Marianne Lesage is the Director of Learning at Bower Park Academy, and she was the Lead Teacher who enrolled the students to develop their skills. She remembers how the week began with some contentious relationships and reluctancy to engage, however by the end of the course she was amazed to see how the pupils rallied together to cheer on their peers and encourage each other to succeed.
In the words of History teacher Mr Kenlin, “Your sponsorship truly has changed the confidence of young people and created opportunities that they wouldn’t have otherwise had”.
The mission of the Outward bound trust is to inspire young people to defy their limitations so they become strong, resilient and curious, ready for the challenges of life. The Hemraj Goyal Foundation are proud to support this great programme and really make a difference.
